While Republicans are rejoicing over capitol hill newspaper Roll Call's characterization of U.S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy as “one of the Democrats’ most threatened members” running for re-election, Pomeroy's office says that the same issue of Roll Call indicates he is likely to win re-election.
The articles in question were both published May 17 in Roll Call, but to read the articles, even online, you must have a subscription.
The story Pomeroy's challenger, Duane Sand, was happy to see is actually about a South Dakotan's campaign for the House, and at the end it refers to Pomeroy, whom it calls "another one of the Democrats' most threatened members this cycle."
Sand and the GOP touted that portion of the story in press releases.
But the same issue of Roll Call has an election preview that says Pomeroy's seat is "likely" to remain Democratic — as opposed to other characterizations such as "safe." Roll Call's assessment says "Pomeroy is once again a Republican target, though he is less of a priority this time around than he was in past cycles … Sand is always likely to benefit from the top of the ticket, as President Bush won the state with 61 percent of the vote in 2000. Pomeroy has shown an ability to run and win close elections, however, and national Republicans seem less keen on this race than in years past."
